the indigenous cultural man from Murray River

[interview, David Tournier - 10 minutes 24 seconds]

David Tournier is a man who wears many cultural hats in the Murray River town of Swan Hill, in north-west Victoria. His formal title is Koori Development Officer, but he also works with the Wambi Land Council, the Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group, chairs the local aspirant community radio committee, and involves in the Certificate of Koori Art and Design in Swan Hill TAFE, a course attracted not only indigenous people but wider community interests.

As a person closely working on indigenous cultural education programs and activities, David believes that in order to know about another culture, one must first know about his /her own, hence acknowledges the similarities and differences.

Vincen O'Donnell talked to David about the cultural hats he wears, including his works in the Koori art course and his future involvement in "Koori 2000". They discussed on the importance of confident access between the various ethnic and cultural communities that form the larger social community, as well as the change of attitudes to aboriginal people in Australian society. David also talked about his origin, and the disruptive education in his childhood attending mostly white-dominated schools.
