David Crystal is a linguist, author of 'English as a Global Language' and co-director of the Bi-cultural Arts Centre at Hollyhead in Wales. He believes that, though English has become a world language, it is vital that local languages be maintained. He spoke to Vincent O'Donnell in Melbourne.
