Telecommunications and the Arts

[interview, story - 5 minutes 30 seconds]

From July 1st, the Australian telecommunications market will be DEREGULATED, and HOW exactly that might effect our social and business culture, and the exploration of the new media as sites for artistic expression, is unknown, perhaps unknowable.

But one thing IS certain: Unless human nature changes, there WILL be disputes between SERVICE USERS, you and me, and service providers, the universal THEM.

Since 1993, there has been a TELECOMMUNICATIONS OMBUDSMAN to resolve disputes, and funded on the principle that the ABUSER not the USER PAYS. The OMBUDSMAN has just announced an expanded role to deal with the challenge of deregulation. Vincent O’Donnell spoke with Deputy OMBUDSMAN Wally Rothwell.
