SATELLITE TELEVISION

Television via satellite has been around for a long time. But as a hobby or as a direct-to-home (DTH) service, it is a fairly new phenomenon in Australia. Unlike Americans and Europeans (who seem to live beneath flying junkyards), the number of "birds" over or with exposure to the land "Down Under" is relatively few - but growing.

We're not just talking pay-TV either. If you are patient enough and take the time to learn about it, there's a fair bit to watch up there for free from all sorts of places all over the world! But bewarned - if the programming you watch may be free, the equipment you need is definitely not. It may not be too expensive to get started, but once the hobby takes a hold of you, deep pockets can be very helpful.

SATELLITE TELEVISION INFORMATION SITES

  • Axiom CompuSat Services
What can I say - I started as a hobbyist, now I'm in the Satellite TV business with my own consultancy. Check out this website - I've tried to create a place on the web which can be a focal point for information about Satellite TV as it relates to Australia and the Asia/Pacific region.

  • Peter Merrett's Satellite TV Infosite
Without a doubt, Peter maintains one of the best satellite television websites in Australia. As well as providing information for anyone wanting to get started in the hobby, Peter also keeps regularly updated charts on what is visible from within Australia and the Asia/Pacific region.

  • DRDISH@TV
Dr.Dish is a German guy who is considered by most enthusiasts as a satellite television guru. Not only does he maintain a website, he regularly contributes to satellite television newsgroups, maintains several satellite television email lists in which he answers hobbyists questions and, not surprisingly, has his own television programme broadcast (how else?) - via satellite!

  • Lyngemark Satellite Charts
Christian Lyngemark's site contains probably the most comprehensive lists including just about every satellite visible from the planet! The charts are updated daily and there are many handy links from the charts themselves directly to the broadcasters who use these satellites. Real enthusiasts find themselves checking this site almost daily to catch up with what's on where.

  • Sat-UK-Web
As the name suggests, this site is principally concerned with satellite television visible from the United Kingdom and Europe. Nonetheless, it still makes interesting reading for the enthusiast.

  • SkyReport - Satellite Industry News
While this site is mainly for the satellite professionals and covers all aspects of satellite communcations, it still contains many items of interest - particularly news of future satellite launches and footprint information.

    SATELLITE OPERATORS WEBSITES

These are links to owner/operators of satellites visible from Australia and the Asia/Pacific region. Sometimes, they can be very useful sources of information. If you're lucky, sometimes the people at these companies even answer your emailed questions, too!

  • AsiaSat (Hong Kong/Chinese)
  • Intelsat (United States)
  • Optus Communications (Australia)
  • Palapa - Satelindo (Indonesia)
  • Panamsat (United States)

  • What to know more about satellite television?
Given half a chance, I could talk about it all day.
But for the moment, you can either leave me a message
    in the alt.satellite.tv.australasia newsgroup
    or email me!
