REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST

Six million Jews perished under Nazi tyranny - perished for no reason
other than the fact that they were Jews.

Like many other Jewish Australians, I am the descendant of Holocaust survivors - Polish Jews who through courage, severe hardship and plain, simple luck lived through the ghettoes and the concentrations camps. That survivor generation is starting to disappear. Everyday, there are fewer and fewer eye-witnesses left to the Nazi crimes against humanity.

I believe it to be a sacred duty for their descendants to maintain the memories of the Holocaust, to remind the world of man's cruelty to man and to counter the efforts of those who, for whatever warped political or social reasons, try to rewrite history to convince others that the whole thing never happened.

The Web is an invaluable way of keeping alive the memories of the Holocaust. On this page are but some of the many resources available on the Internet. (If you know of others please tell me.) I created this page as my simple way of remembering those who perished and of honouring those who survived.

Never Again!

YAD VASHEM HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL (ISRAEL)

  • Established in 1953 in Jerusalem, this is undoubtedly the world's most famous tribute to the memory of the 6 million Martyrs. Once visited, Yad Vashem can never be forgotten.
  • U.S. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM

  • Opened in April 1993 in Washington D.C., this museum is a memorial to ALL who perished in the Holocaust. Its emphasis is on photographic and cinema exhibits.
  • SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTRE

  • CYBRARY OF THE HOLOCAUST

  • This is an excellent on-line collection of resources for students of the Holocaust, in particular, and of anti-semitism, in general.

  • TEACHING THE HOLOCAUST

  • This is an interdisciplinary and computerised programme that teaches the Holocaust through the use of stamps, pictures, texts and paintings created by children in the Holocaust.
  • THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE

  • This house, located in Amsterdam, was the scene of the one of the Holocaust's most famous personal stories. This page gives a short account of the Frank family's attempt to survive. It also provides information for anyone wishing to visit this shrine to those who perished.
  • NIZKOR PROJECT (HOLOCAUST ARCHIVE)

  • Remembrance and countering the efforts of the Holocaust-deniers is the main aim of the Nizkor Project. As a major Holocaust archive, it contains over 4,000 files available.

  • SHOAH: SPIELBERG'S OTHER LIST

  • LENI RIEFENSTAHL FILMS

  • This site, at the Australian National University, has many images from the two most (in)famous films of Nazi film-maker Leni Riefenstahl - Triumph of the Will ("Triumph des Willens") and Olympia ("Olympiad"). The fact that they are made-to-order Nazi propaganda does not detract from their historical value.

The music you're listening to is the opening theme to
    Steven Spielberg's masterpiece, "Schindler's List".
It still stirs the emotions every time I hear it.
