Welcome to Victorian Hansard

The Department of Parliamentary Debates is proud to serve the Parliament of Victoria, having played an integral part in the operation of the Parliament for most of its history — that is, from the beginning of the fifth Parliament in 1866.

The Victorian Parliament has always featured prominently in Australian political life. Following Federation, Parliament House was home to the federal Parliament from 1901 until 1927. During that period the Parliament of Victoria resided in the Royal Exhibition Building, which on 9 May 1901 was the venue for the opening of the first Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Victorian Parliament is also where many notable figures began their political careers, including former Prime Ministers Sir Alfred Deakin and Sir Robert Menzies.

Many aspects of the Parliament’s operations have changed considerably over the past few years. In order to remain relevant to and better meet the needs of those it serves, Victorian Hansard has embraced technological innovation and is constantly reviewing its editorial and operational procedures. It expects to continue providing excellent service and to meet the challenges of an environment of constant and often rapid change.
