EXPEDITION AFOGNAK

Our mixed expedition for men and women of all ages will take place in Alaska in June 1996. The group of 18 participants will spend 12 days working with local researchers on the prehistoric and contact period archaeology of the Afognak/Kodiak Archipelago for the Afognak Native Corporation. Expect to find painted and carved images of animals, birds, and people; carved masks; painted human figurines; decorated baskets and bowls; technologically complex bone and ivory harpoon forms; warriors' shields and lances; and items of personal adornment such as bracelets, lip plugs and facial labrets (cheek plugs). The area is home to Kodiak bears, bald eagles, seals, whales and sea otters with 24 hours of daylight to observe them! We have allowed for a full eight week airfare or personal exploration in North America prior to returning to Australia.
