Mark I was about us for us. Mark II was about us, for everyone. Mark III is about us, specifically for the younger generation.
POW’s have long felt that the history of the Japanese invasion of the Pacific as we experienced it, was slipping away, and that the younger generation couldn’t develop a clear understanding of it unless it was told before we all moved on.
Many hundreds of historians and writers have given their version of the history of the war in the Pacific. Volumes of their books fill the libraries of the world, but the young are never likely to delve through them. I believe a brief summary of the significant experiences and battles is necessary to provide an overview of what took place during those crucial years of our history.
Because our experiences were unique, I considered it necessary to add our own version of the truth to existing views. This would enable all points of view to be taken into consideration when forming ones opinion about the war in the Pacific.
This is vital to ensure that when young people are called on to make decisions relating the future security, freedom and happiness of our country, they are right.
Mark III presents a summary of our experiences during our captivity and a brief outline of the major conquests that occurred as the Japanese Invasion Fleet headed toward Australia. The highlights of the battles that took place when the American Navy repulsed Japan’s thrust, have been culled from what I consider reputable authorities.
The book highlights how lucky we are to retain the freedom we enjoy today, and the lessons the war exposed, so that we may avoid repeating the errors of the past.
I have also presented incidents that relate to the culture of the Japanese adversaries as experienced by us. This will give the young a side of the truth they may otherwise have been spared.
While I hope the book will be interesting to others, it is mainly directed to our grandchildren in whose hands our country’s future rests. We are supremely confident that young Australians will secure the freedom and happiness of our wonderful country.
