ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION/PRIMATE CAMPAIGN

Press Release, Monash University Primate Experiments, 26 September 1996

The Primate Campaign focuses on the use of primates for research purposes in laboratories, particularly on two major campuses - Melbourne and Monash universities.

At Melbourne University experiments have been performed on monkeys in relation to deafness, invitro-fertilisation and Altzheimer's disease.

At Monash University research is being carried out into Parkinson's disease using monkeys. The primates are injected with a toxic chemical, MPTP, which produces symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. They are held in restraint chairs and electrodes are implanted through a hole in the skull. The monkeys are required to make responses to certain stimuli and are rewarded if they make the right response. Click here for more information on this campaign.
