ANIMAL LIBERATION -

EQUAL CONSIDERATION FOR ALL ANIMALS

LIVE ANIMAL EXPORT

Every 2 minutes a sheep dies in transit. Cattle, too, are transported under horrific conditions. Your support is needed to end this shameful and barbaric practise by Australia!

MEDIA RELEASE MEDIA RELEASE

LIVE EXPORTS, AUSTRALIA’S DISGRACE

NOW LIVE EXPORTS TO MEXICO FROM PORTLAND 11 NOVEMBER 1996

We are regularly told that live exports are necessary to satisfy traditional religious customs of the Middle East.

Why are 80,000 sheep being shipped from Portland (Victoria) today to Christian Mexico?

Animal Liberation condemns the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporations greed. over 1,000 of these animals will perish en-route. This is absolute exploitation and greed.

There is an alternative.

1592 CATTLE DIE AS SHIP SINKS

CONDEMNATION OF TRADE IN LIVE ANIMALS - AGAIN !

En route from Brisbane to Osaka, Japan, 1592 cattle have drowned when the livestock carrier Guernsey Express sank after taking water, 85 nautical miles from Guam in the Pacific Ocean, late on Saturday 9 November.

Twenty crew, including an Australian stockman, were rescued.

This disaster comes just two months after the loss of over 67,000 sheep on a live sheep carrier on its way to the Middle East.

Animals Australia, representing some 40 animal welfare groups throughout Australia and New Zealand, holds the Australian live animal trade in utter contempt and calls for an immediate halt to live exports, followed by a thorough investigation into all aspects of live animal transport from Australia, in the wake of this latest tragedy.

Spokesperson, Carole de Fraga, said today:

It's not enough for Australian officials to whitewash individual tragedies of such enormous scale with statements that reflect indifference to animal suffering and death when trade issues are involved. To say that such things happen from time to time is ludicrous. They should not happen at all. It's clear from recent events that the live export trade is putting animals at risk of a miserable death. Even when things go smoothly, the animals suffer. This latest tragedy causes us to reiterate what we have said so many times before : the export trade in live animals should stop.

Protest

On Tuesday 15 October about 35 Animal Liberationists and supporters gathered outside the Minister for Agriculture, Pat McNamara's office at the Department of Agriculture, to protest Australia's live animal export trade.

The protest included crosses, wreath, costumes and placards. Information leaflets were handed out to the public. The protest received good radio coverage, but unfortunately no coverage on any of the mainstream TV channels. Community TV, Channel 31, filmed the event for their Access show. Entry to the building was requested by us, to lay a wreath and a cross in the actual office of the Minister as a symbol of the millions of animals that have died as a result of the live export trade, but the doors were closed on us, and entry was refused.

A meeting took place on Friday 1 November at the Department of Agriculture. Rosemary Lamb and Jim Roberts attended from AL. The Minister himself did not attend, but had his secretary sit in and take notes. Our concerns were noted and we are awaiting further action.
