Nelson's Navy was officially formed in March 2004, although
the group has existed as a loose confederation of like minded
individuals for some time. We portray a period in Britain's
Naval history when England became the leading sea power in the
world. Our name says it all "Nelson's Navy". The period
from 1770 when the great man joined, to 1805 when he was cut
down by a French sharpshooter.
We are proud members of the Australian Napoleonic
Association (ANA), where initially, our founding members came
from. Currently most of our members are in other Georgian/Napoleonic
era groups but share a common interest in the naval sea history
of Great Britain spurred on by the great Naval fiction writers,
O’Brian, Stockwin, C.S. Forester and other great writers of
this period. Membership of other groups is not a prerequisite;
all prospective members undergo a nomination and vetting procedure
and are mentored until you are fully kitted and confident.

|
Our membership is open to all like minded people, families are all
welcome to participate as women and children, albeit unofficially,
played a major role in ships of the period. Currently we have
two crews, one in the state of Victoria and another in Queensland.
We dress and arm as seaman of the period, we have several
naval guns (cannon), the largest piece is a 4pdr located in
Victoria.
We portray a shore party from the ship the 1804 "Swiftsure"
We have recently raised a Royal Marine unit, with members currently kitting out in Victoria and
New South Wales

|
Our present 1st Lieutenant
is a serving Lt Commander in the Royal Australian Navy, our
committee structure is not based on rank, everyone has a contribution
to make to the running of our group.
Musket and edged weapon ownership is subject to State Legislation
and all members who wish to carry side arms or join the gun
crews, have to undergo a training program in the safe handling
of these items before they will be allowed to perform in public
and be able to undergo a licensing program in their own state.
We stress the social aspects of our group, we usually only
meet at re enactments because of the tyranny of distance and
are linked by a passion for the era and
history of the men and women we portray.
Many of our members are
passionate collectors of Royal Navy weapons and artefacts,
and it is these items that make up the basis of our static
and living history displays
