| Botox What is Botox? - Botox (or Botulism Toxin type A) is a very dilute, purified and refined chemical toxin isolated from Botulism. What does it do? - Botox blocks the action of a muscle's motor end plate - that is the functional part of the muscle which is involved in the contraction or shortening of muscle - thus preventing the muscle from contracting. Why would anyone want to do this? -Botox is a new type of therapy that has recently been introduced for children with CP. When Botox is injected into muscles, it reduces their spasticity or tightness . The effect of BOTOX is to relieve muscle spasm. The effects of each injection lasts approximately three months. It is suggested that once severe muscle spasms have been relieved, physical therapy maybe more effective in building muscle strength and coordination. Our findings with Amy Amy has two treatments of Botox. Both times the effects were seen immediately. Amy's tone was reduced. Whilst under the influence of Botox Amy is able to "walk" with both feet flat on the floor. Amy legs also are not twisting as much, however this twisting varies with Amy's tiredness & muscle tone
