Australian Library Week

May 4 - 10

All around Australia from 4 to 10 May, libraries will celebrate the role of libraries and information. The theme for 1997 is "Libraries a Web of Information".

In Victoria, Australian Library Week is co-ordinated by the Victorian Branch of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).



Great Victoria-wide activities include:

  • Competition for Kids, Ages 6 - 11.
    drawn Friday May 2nd. The winner is: Brett Mclatchie of Berwick
    PRIZES: Books to the value of $100, and a t-shirt too!
  • Competition for Teenagers, Ages 11 - 18.
    drawn Friday May 2nd. The winner is: Dale Wilson of Lara
    PRIZES: Access to the Internet for a Year with Vicnet ($250), Vicnet Software ($90), total prize value: $340.

Launch of Australian Library Week in Victoria

4pm in the Village Roadshow Theatrette of the State Library of Victoria the winners of the two competitions mentioned above will be announced.

Behind the scenes tours of the Library book stacks
2pm to 5pm

Short tours at 2.30pm, 3.00pm, 3.30pm, 4.00pm and 4.30pm.

See the old book stacks in the Domed building, and our new basement stacks, while library staff and voluntary guides talk about the history of the Library, how we store and deliver from the collections, and the impact of the Library Redevelopment on these services. Numbers on each tour are limited, no bookings taken! Meet in the foyer of the Library and Museum, corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets, Melbourne. FREE!


The NEW State Library of Victoria

An illustrated talk by Mr Ken Woolley from the architectural firm Ancher Mortlock and Woolley, architects of the State Library's Redevelopment Project.

Music in the Dome

5.45pm to 6.45pm
Celebrate Australian Library week with a Capella group "Once more with feeling" in the wonderful surrounds of the State Library's icon, the Domed Reading Room.
