ABOUT ROTARY
Rotary was first established in 1905 by a Chicago lawyer Paul Harris. The first meeting was held on the 23rd of February that year and led to the establishment of the Rotary Club of Chicago.
A Paul Harris Fellow is now the esteemed award presented to Rotarians when their Club considers they have made an outstanding contribution to Rotary and its humanitarian aims.
Since then, Rotary, the first and largest service club organisation, has grown to over 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
Rotary’s members form a global network of business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world.
Rotary’s motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organisations more than 1.2 million members.
Strong fellowship amongst Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterise Rotary worldwide.
The Rotary organisation is essentially all the clubs belonging to the global association Rotary International. For guidance and support their are 532 different Districts to which the Clubs belong.
Rotary International administers the Rotary Foundation to which all clubs contribute and, from which, major service projects are funded. Since its inception, contributions of US$1.7 billion have been made and US$1.6 billion has been spent on humanitarian projects such as the Polio eradication program
