Planning For The Future

The program:

Employment Focus is a 2-3 year course designed to assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder or similar, to develop the necessary skills to gain open employment upon graduation.

Employment Focus is specifically designed for individuals who require a small intensive program to bridge the gap between school and employment options.

The course participants will explore and experience employment opportunities. Links to suitable employment support services including Alpha Employment Service will be developed.

The central feature of this service is to develop independence, social and interpersonal skills. These being the key elements to successful employment.

Individual program plans are developed in conjunction with the consumer, the service, family and carers. Via this process, specific needs based programs will be developed , implemented and reviewed.

The program is based at 47 Nott St. Port Melbourne and will link into a range of facilities available in the local community. Training in independent travel may be provided short term but transport is not provided by the service.

Program areas:

Social and behavioural training

To develop skills which will enable individuals to better monitor, control and understand their behaviour. To interact with others in a socially appropriate manner and to increase awareness of self and others in varied environments. To understand society, culture and the rules we live by.

Communication

The development of skills which will enable the individual to control their environment and communicate to effectively meet their needs

Vocational training

To identify realistic desirable employment options, develop work ethic, presentation, interview skills, resume writing, specific work skills suited to interests.

Independent living skills

To develop a sense of responsibility to self and others. To learn about day to day living including money, budgeting, cooking, home maintenance and related skills as well as a range of recreation and leisure pursuits. All work and no play..............

Size of Service

The service will accommodate about 15 consumers. By keeping the service small we offer an enhanced personalised service with attention and consistency of program for the consumers.

Hours of service

Nominal hours are from 9.30 - 4.00 Monday to Friday for 40 weeks of the year.

Plus 6 weeks work experience.

Cost of service

Administration fee is currently $15.00 per week

Program Fees - No specific fees are charged. Costs in relation to recreation venues, community access, cooking programs, food purchases and personal items are the consumers responsibility. Generally $20.00 Per week should cover most activities.

Summary

This is just a brief outline of the primary aims of Employment Focus. The charter of the program is to provide the next stage in the natural transition each individual must go through when moving from child/adolescent phase to adulthood.
