Professional Library Tours and Individual Visits

On Monday 7 October and Friday 11 October, you may choose from a range of full or half day tours combining business and pleasure!

All tours will depart from the World Congress Centre returning via the Arts Centre to the Congress Centre unless otherwise stated. Book your choice on the registration form. Numbers are limited, so book early to ensure your place. Sponsored by nashuatec

Monday 7 October

PLT 1.1 From Legal Eagles to Where the Big Men Fly.

Depart 9.30am Concludes 4.00pm.

Begin the day with a visit to the historical Supreme Court Library, before moving on to the State Library where a major redevel-opment is in progress. Visit its majestic domed reading room, VICNET, Genealogy, and the Business Information Centre. Visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground and see the MCC Library, Gallery of Sport, Olympic Museum and the famous Long Room. Time out for a light lunch in the bistro before a stroll across the Fitzroy Gardens or a ride on the City Circle Tram to the elegant Parliamentary Library.

PLT 1.2 Bellbirds and Bookmarks - Library Visits to the Melbourne Bush.

This half day tour takes a look at two different public libraries and a state-of-the-art storage facility for academic monographs. First stop, the superb new Eltham Public Library, designed specifically to fit into the artists' colony in the bush feel of this outer Melbourne suburb. Time to purchase morning tea before visiting the Diamond Valley Public Library to see what has been done to bring an existing older library building bang up to date. Then on to the CARM (CAVAL Archival and Research Materials) Centre on the La Trobe University campus. This Cold Store with its very high preservation properties will house single copies of academic monographs in near perfect conditions on a consolidated site. Then itŐs back to the city and the afternoon is yours - perhaps lunch at Southgate, a visit to the Gallery or the Botanical Gardens.

PLT 1.3 Publishers: The Other Side of the Coin.

Reed Education and Academic Publishing cordially invite you to attend a half day session visiting the publishing house and warehouse in Port Melbourne. The tour will consist of a workshop on The Internet and its application to the library environment plus a guided tour of the warehouse and the publishing house. The session will be conducted by Jonathon Roper, Electronic Publisher for Reed Interactive and Gail Weston, Sales Manager, Reed Library. Come and get the whole picture of educational and academic publishing as it is today.

Friday 11 October

PLT 2.1 The Best Days of Your Life Revisited.

Take a glimpse into three different school libraries and see them at work on a typical busy school day.

First stop, bustling cosmopolitan South Yarra to visit the Melbourne High School, where one can have access to the library from any location in the school. Then on to leafy Kew where GenezzanoŐs refurbished library is a delight to its community of 900 girls from Year 7 to Year 12. Finally, visit Caulfield Grammar School, Wheelers Hill Campus and witness 3 year olds enthralled in the magic of picture story books, whilst through the glass door, a Year 12 student searches through the maze of electronic sources for the very latest information for a Physics CAT.

PLT 2.2 Pinot on the Peninsula

Departs 8.45am Concludes 4.30pm

Join us for a whole dayŐs outing on the glorious Mornington Peninsula. Visit the new library at John Paul College in Frankston, marvel at the view at the Monash Mt Eliza Business School while you enjoy morning tea, then visit the Hastings Branch of Mornington Peninsula Libraries and check out Nepean Net - the Internet site for the Peninsula. Lunch at Dromana Estate Vineyard. Return trip via the coast road.

PLT 2.3 Publishers: both sides of the coin

Ever wondered just how a CD-ROM is made? Then join us for an interesting morningŐs tour which will take in both sides of electronic publications. See how CDs are made and then see them in action in the real world setting of a busy academic library.

See how CD-ROMs are produced at Informit - the home of AUSTROM, Business Australia on Disc, and the various Pioneers Indexes for genealogical research.
