Your invitation to Reading the Future

In 1896 the gentlemen managers of Australian libraries gathered in Melbourne for the first national conference. I hope you will join us as we celebrate that centenary, building on 100 years of professional development, and looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

We have an exciting programme, with an impressive line-up of speakers from Australia and overseas, a busy pre and post conference schedule of workshops, meetings, visits and tours, and a week of marvellous Melbourne social events. The theme Reading the Future is taken up each day in a different way with sessions covering management and workforce issues, access to information in the context of new technology, professional development, and the cultural and communications environment in which we operate.

There is something there for everyone, plus the opportunity to get together with colleagues from all round Australia and overseas, from all types of libraries.

We look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne.

Helen Tait, President of ALIA.

The conferences of the Australian Library and Information Association have earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence within the library community. The Centenary conference in Melbourne will be one of the best.

The issues to be covered at the conference embrace specific professional development interests and, importantly, the event will provide opportunities for networking and for enjoying the company of colleagues - new and old.

Our Association is committed to serving the interests of its members and the broader information sector. Conferences provide the opportunity to find out more about what your Association is doing for you and for you to let us know more about your needs. While you are in Melbourne come and speak to ALIA staff at our stand in the exhibition area. Whatever you do - don't miss this important event on the Australian library calendar.
