(2003/06/26) 54th Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival - FINAL INFORMATION BULLSHEET

Extract from choral-announce

54th Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival
Canberra 4-20 July 2003

FINAL INFORMATION BULLSHEET

Greetings fellow IVer! We are only 1.5 short weeks away from starting this festival we have been anticipating for so long. We are so excited and look forward to having you here. In the meantime, we must inform you of important matters relating to the festival so that you are prepared and know what's happening, how to get here, and ensure we don't find you lost in the middle of a paddock in Yass!

Where to go!

On the first day, registration will take place from 3pm-8pm on Friday 4 July. This will take place in the Hayden Allen Building, room HAG051 (on the ground floor, facing into the courtyard near to the Union building) on campus at the ANU.

If you have requested to be collected, a friendly SCUNA member will meet you at the time and place you have indicated. If you have not let Eric know, please email him at transport@civ.aicsa.org.au, or call 0407 468 244.

From 5pm, choristers will be gathering at P.J. O'Reilly's pub on the corner of Alinga St and Moore St in the Melbourne Building in Civic (close to the ANU!).

Those arriving on Saturday 5 July, please proceed to the ANU where we will be taking registrations in HAG051 from 9am. Rehearsals will begin at 10am in the Manning Clark Lecture Theatre 2 (where most of our rehearsals will be taking place) on campus, near the Union Building. We will be here until 5.30pm. On the Saturday evening we will be in the hall of St. John's Reid, on Constitution Ave.

If you are one of the unusual ones arriving directly at camp, Trinity College is on the corner of Clinton and College Streets in Goulburn. If you are arriving there from Melbourne/Canberra, turn off the Hume Highway, proceed to a T-intersection (Clinton St) and turn left, until you reach Trinity College. If you are approaching from Sydney, take the Goulburn turn off, and continue until you go down the main street of Goulburn (Auburn St), then turn right into Clinton St (the Hume Hwy), and go straight ahead until you reach Trinity College. If you are arriving any other way, let us know and we will pick you up.

For those arriving the 2nd week, we will be meeting for a group photo at 1.30pm on the steps of Old Parliament House on Saturday 12 July (to try and maximise the number of participants in the photo). You will then have a free afternoon before rehearsals start at 7pm in the Manning Clark Lecture Theatre at the ANU.

If you are arriving at any other time, or any other place, please let us know!

What to wear!

Concert Dress: All black, from ankle to wrist to neck. This means long sleeved black tops for women and black ankle length skirts or pants. For men, long sleeved black tops and black pants.

Theme Party: BACK TO SCHOOL AT HOGWARTS. Dress appropriately and strut about in your finest Harry Potteresque style to coincide with the exciting release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (great book!!).

Academic Dinner: This is where you get to show off the exceptional style and elegance you possess! Formal attire is the go for this glamourous occasion (ie. black tie, ball dress etc.)

Other attire: It is damn cold in Canberra, with temperatures often below zero at night time. Bring warm clothes (thick woolen socks, scarves, beanies, thermals, etc.). Those from QLD and WA especially are in for a shock!

(2003/06/15) Erato 89 - Call for Submissions

Erato Announcment

The next edition of Erato will be a post-CIV edition. Hence the deadline for the next edition of Erato will be Monday 28th July (or post marked Sunday 27th for postal submissions). Feel free to submit reports or articles at any time between now and then. We hope to have Erato No.89 printed and posted in August.

We will accept (almost) anything! We are keen to receive a variety of submissions so articles of humor, interest or news would be greatly appreciated.

Please submit your Society and Festival reports by the end of Canberra IV. You may like to make your AIVCC report suitable for print in Erato, so you only have to write one report? Then again you may wish to write different reports? As long as you submit something to Erato we will be happy. Any photos to accompany Society and Festival reports will make your reading of these pages more enjoyable.

We are also looking for articles about anything AICSA or simply choral related. If there are freshers out there going to CIV please write something about IV or your Society. We are always keen to hear from our newest members. Articles from longer serving members will also be warmly received. Jonny and I highly encourage everyone, any member of an AICSA choir, to submit reports, articles, photos, humour pieces or (almost) anything at all.

If anyone has any photos from choral occassions (especially the recent Perth Festival or following Canberra IV), we would love to have copies of them.

In terms of submissions, we are not particular! Feel free to email, post, fax, phone, SMS, refer us to a website for us to access your submission, tin can and string, verbally in person, any means other than ESP is fine with us. You can contact me (Tim Dunstone) on the following:

(2003/06/12) CIV2003 Concert Dress

Extract from choral-announce

This is going onto the FAQ as soon as I get a chance, but since it seems to be the number one question everyone's asking, here's the answer:

Concert dress for both concerts at CIV2003 is black: neck to wrist to toe. Provided the only bits of you we can see are your head and hands, and the rest is covered in inky blackness, you can make of that what you will. That means: no cleavage-down-to-the-navel, no x-rated lacy see-through body stockings, no yellow bikini and lurid pink miniskirt with lime gumboots and fairy wings. But: dresses, shirts, skirts, skivvies (!), trousers, slacks, dress pants -- all are acceptable regardless of gender, within reason. HOWEVER: ultimately, Lukey reserves the right to kick you off stage without warning if you're grubby, scruffy, offensively attention-seekingly weird or just plain unsightly, so be reasonable, OK? Excellent.

Incidentally: your rego fee includes virtual concert tickets, so if you can't be on stage to sing, you can still attend the concert and cough along with the audience.

One hundred and thirty two registrants. Only 3 weeks, 1 day, 4 hours, 5 minutes and 15 seconds until IV. Get your rego forms in now, if you haven't already. Woohoo!

(2003/06/03) CIV2003 Rego Fax Lines Now Open!

Extract from choral-announce

By popular request we now have a dedicated line with a fax machine, for you to send your CIV2003 rego forms in. The number is (02) 6259-0839. It's a thermal paper fax, so please write clearly. However, it's dedicated, so you don't need cover sheets and all that gumph unless you're sending something other than a rego form.

Remember: rego is due by THIS FRIDAY, otherwise you pay an extra $30 late fee. To see who's registered so far, go to http://www.civ.aicsa.org.au/ and click on Registration.

(2003/05/27) Review of SCUNA concert 17/5/3

Extract from choral-net

Fresh voices in pleasant tribute to the night
By Ditta Zizi (The Canberra Times, Monday May 26, 2003)

Songs of Love and Night, for [sic] SCUNA at St Andrew

SONGS of Love and Night was the theme for a concert of 19th century German choral music presented by SCUNA.

Featuring songs or lieder from the major exponents of German vocal repertoire such as Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf and Franz Schubert, the common link was night and its many metaphors - tranquility, prayer, love and death.

Songs from this period were written for general consumption relying on creating immediate melodic interest coupled with a sympathetic response to the text. The selection of repertoire for this concert was skilfully selected for the group with plenty of musical interest for the audience.

SCUNA, or the Australian National University Choral Society, is a non-auditioned choir with members from the general community as well as students and staff of the ANU.

This large group of voices, directed by Jonathan Powles, produced a fresh sound imbued with a clear enjoyment of singing. In tag-team fashion Powles and assistant conductor Matthew Stuckings shared the conducting of the first half of the program.

In most instances SCUNA rose to the demands of the repertoire. The program was sung in German throughout and the mood of each song was clearly conveyed though thoughtful phrasing, dynamics and vocal colour. This was particularly evident in the bracket of four contrasting Brahms songs. They were delivered effectively, especially the beautiful O Schone Nacht.

Also noteworthy were two lively pieces by Schubert, which concluded the first half of the program. The first was a polished performance of the majestic anthem to the sun, An die Sonne followed by a lively rendition of the cheerful Lebenslust

The second half of the program featured the Liebeslieder Waizer Opus 52 by Brahms. This delightful collection of 18 short songs, dealing with the various aspects of love, features a four-hand piano accompaniment. Under the enthusiastic and well-paced conducting of Powles, with excellent playing from Elizabeth Wilson and Adam Laslett, SCUNA delivered an energetic and enjoyable performance.

SCUNA produced a pleasant sound throughout the concert, however, the dominance of the soprano line in some instances detracted from the overall performance. This became noticeable in the louder passages to the detriment of the other parts.

(2003/05/26) IV Social Rego FAQ

Extract from choral-net

1. Q. Why should I pay you $20 to be a social participant?
A. No reason at all. Do it all yourself if you like. We'd love you to be there in the audience, PCP etc.

2. Q. OK, then why _might_ I pay?
A. For convenience. We will help out with your Transport & Billetting if you need it. And all for the price of $20, and your concert ticket & FIBS are thrown in.

3. Q. Do I have to pay a late fee on my $20?? $30 seems a but steep!
A. No late fee applies. If you want T&B at the last minute, though, you had better be SERIOUSLY nice to the T&B officer... He does not like alcohol or chocolate, so buggered if I know the appropriate appeasement. You might get billetted in a freezing woodshed with spiders. To avoid this, simply send the form in early. Pay on arrival is fine.

4. Q. Is that $20 per week if it's a middle sort of week week, like Friday-Wednesday and I'm only going to concert one and the AcaDinner?
A. No. $20 per concert.

5. Q. Can I stay a night at camp for that fee?
A. You are kidding, right? No, you can't. Single nights at camp are available (all meals included) for $40 student, $50 full. Yes, we know this is NOT cheap, so feel free to club together for motel rooms.

6. Q. Really? What if I party most of the night and sleep in someone else's bed?
A. Lucky you.

(2003/05/19) Correction to CIV rego forms

Extract from choral-announce

A quick correction to the CIV2003 registration forms. Currently it says:

You can attend either week and sing in the concert for that week, or attend both weeks and sing in both concerts, or skip all the rehearsals and be a social participant free of charge (but we may ask you to help with front-of-house or other helpful stuff).

This has changed. To keep a handle on the complexities of tracking social registrants, we're charging a nominal fee of $20. This includes a concert ticket, so it's actually not too bad! It also means we'll keep you informed about social events, so you're not on your own.

For more information about the costs of CIV2003 for people who aren't attending the full event, see http://flurf.net/civ/faq.php?q=part-fees.

(2003/15/14) MUCS Cocert Review

From The Age

Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne University Choral Society

Melbourne Town Hall, 7 May 2003
By Joel Crotty

The C & C Rigg bequest funds have made a significant difference to the development of music-making in this city. Over the years, institutions such as the School of Music at Monash University and the Victorian Colledge of the Arts have been fortunate recipients of money from this estate, which has enabled them to undertake more adventurous programming.

Last week the VCA's Music School and the Melbourne University Choral Society combined to perform a score that is seldom heard in Melbourne, namely a realisation of Mahler's Symphony no. 2. This is a tough workout even for the most professional orchestras. So when a student body of instrumentalists and choristers come together to play one of the marathons of symphonic literature, the pressure would have been on from the first rehearsal. Under the watchful ears and eyes of intrepid conductor Marco van Pagee, the orchestra and choir produced a performance that was of exceptional quality. While the strings were uniformly good, it was the woodwinds - now under the direction of Derek Jones - that exposed the music's array of colours. The oboes, in particular, need special mention as they made every effort to project a warm, sensitive tone.

The choir, prepared by Andrew Wailes, produced an excellent, blended tone while soloists Tania Ferris (alto) and Michelle Cook (soprano), enhanced the music's dimensions.

Before interval, the choir and orchestra combined to perform Brahm's Schicksalslied, a sombre piece that sat well in a program that had Mahler's Second Symphony on the card; both works deal with human destiny in rather solemn terms.

After a tentative start from the chorus, the combined forces carefully alternated between the sombre and animated sections. But it was completely dwarfed by the symphony in the second half.

(2003/05/08) CIV Update

Extract from choral-announce

Greetings all AICSA choristers.

Only 8 weeks and 1 day until the choral event of 2003!! Here are a few extra pieces of information that you may find useful in preparing yourself for the festival.

ERATO
The bullsheet and registration form for the festival are in your new edition of Erato 88. They are available now in your local choir. Ensure you pick up one at the next rehearsal. Bullsheets and rego forms are otherwise available on our website ( www.civ.aicsa.org.au). A reminder that registrations posted after June 6 attracts a $30 late fee.

FLUVAX
Considering the nature of the lurgy at the previous Canberra festival in 1996, we recommend that you obtain a flu vaccination from your local GP. For more information, see the following website: http://healthanswers.telstra.com/drugdata/appco/00097689.asp

SOCIAL REGISTRATION
We have had a significant number of enquiries about social registration For those not performing in the concert, a social registration is available at a rate of $20 per week of the festival. Included in this $20 is a concert ticket for that week, as well as a Festival Information Bullsheet (official name to be released at the time of the festival), and contributes towards the running of the festival. The current registration form does not have an item for social registration, however a new downloadable rego form for social registrants will be made available early next week (and will be simple in nature).

CONCERT DRESS
In order to help with your planning, concert dress will be all black "from ankle to neck to wrist". In other words long sleeved black shirts and pants for men, long black skirts or pants and long sleeved tops for women.

BEDDING AT CAMP
At camp during the first week, you will need to supply your own single bed bedspread/fitted sheet, pillow, and sleeping bag/doona. Only a mattress is supplied.

GETTING HERE
The festival officially starts at 3pm on Friday, 4 July with registration and a pub evening. However, rehearsals will not start until 10am on Saturday, 5 July. For those attending only the second week, rehearsals will begin at 3pm on Saturday, 12 July. Ensure that you are able to get here by these times at the latest (and preferably earlier to allow yourself time to register). If you will be unable to get here by these times, please email me to let me know. If you are from Victoria or NSW, car pooling is probably the easiest way to get here. Otherwise, flying is a much more viable option if you come from further away places such as Tas, WA, QLD or SA. For good flight deals, visit the websites of Qantas ( www.qantas.com.au), Virgin Blue (www.virginblue.com.au), or for interest purposes on that airline we used to have ... visit www.ansett.com.au. For any further queries, you are more than welcome to contact our transport and billetting officer Eric TF Bat ( transport@civ.aicsa.org.au).

In closing .... we are very much looking forward to having you here, and can't believe that this festival is coming upon us very quickly. Thank you to those who have registered already. You will be receiving acknowledgments of your registrations shortly. Receipts will be distributed at the time of registration (unless you request otherwise).

In the meantime, happy singing, and wishing you all the best for yours first concerts of 2003 (and I understand the MUCS one was very successful ... well done!).

For further information, keep posted to our website, www.civ.aicsa.org.au, or feel free to email me personally.

See you at IV!
