2003 (1st Quarter)Articles this quarter:
(2003/03/31) 450th anniversary of "Laudate"Excerpt from choral-announce The piece of music by Dr Christopher Tye, which eventually became the ditty we know as "Laudate", was composed 450 years ago (give or take a month), so I've taken the opportunity of making a new version. In fact, I've made several "new" versions, as explained at the following web page, being hosted courtesy of Karl Aloritias: http://www.arach.net.au/~algernon/laudate/history.html (N.B. Acrobat Reader required for musical examples) As the "traditional" AICSA Laudate has been simplified from what Tye wrote, my own new edition takes some liberties, such as giving back the altos something of a melody at the end (a radical idea there ;) and changing some of the less sensible word underlay (which is a later addition anyway). It is offered for free, for comment, and if anyone wants to sing that version instead of the "trad" one they're welcome to. I notice that Karl is doing a lot of work on songbook material for Perth IV -- some of which is duplicating stuff which has already been done by numerous people for IV's past -- is there any hope of making this sort of society task a more unified effort? Perhaps a solution might be a [choral-editors] mailing list (or possibly a Yahoo group, or summat) to request music to be edited, and delegate the editing... If the same effort that goes into producing pub songs were applied to finding new material the repertoire of AICSA pub songs might be three or four times larger. [1] ... [1] Anyone who doubts the amount of duplication of work involved

For those that don't know about Rottofest, it is a relaxing and fun minifest-cum-party traditionally held immediately after PIV on the fabulous Rottnest Island, just off the cost of Perth. No obligations, no compulsory rehearsals, no concert stress, just fun. However, as PIV in 2004 will be running a week or so later than it normally does, we are providing people with the chance to have Rottofest in the week before PIV 2004. Naturally, we want your say about this. If you wish to attend Rottofest in 2004, please e-mail me at algernon at aloku.net indicating your intention to come, and if you would prefer Rottofest to be before or after PIV. If you wish to stay longer/shorter than the listed dates, please indicate that, too. Please not that this is merely a quick hand count and vote, and is NOT a formal registration. So, the options: Accomodation will be ABOUT (this is not a final quote!) $15 per person per night, although it may rise to $20 per person per night depending on how long you want to stay and what standard of accomodation you want. Camping is also an option; a flat rate of $6 per person per night applies. Get those votes rolling in, Rotto-fans! (2003/03/27) Change to CIV2003 RegoExcerpt from choral-announce There's been a slight change to CIV2003 registration. Registrations postmarked on or before 27 March 2003 will NOT be affected, and neither will registrations paid by cheque or money order. Only credit card payments made after today are affected. Read on if this applies to you... The banks charge us for credit card transactions, to the tune of 5% from each transaction. That's nearly $20 of a typical full adult rego + dinner + camp fee of $380! We therefore wish to strongly discourage the use of credit card registration from now on! We're doing this three ways:
Thus, if you pay by credit card after this moment, you need to add on an extra 5% to your bill. So for the above-mentioned adult rego of $380, you actually pay $399. This means we still keep slightly less than the full amount (do the maths if you like) but it's only cents instead of decadollars. New rego forms are now available at http://www.civ.aicsa.org.au/. Please throw out the old ones, or edit by hand if you're frugal. (2003/03/27) Perth IV 2004: DatesExcerpt from choral-announce The dates for the 55th Intervarsity Choral Festival (Perth IV 2004) have now been finalised. They are: Start - Friday 6th February 2004 (arrival, registration) (We apologise for the delay in finalising these dates; this was due to matters beyond our control.) More information about PIV 2004 will be provided at a later stage. In the meantime you can get your IV fix in July at Canberra (http://www.civ.aicsa.org.au/). We hope to see you all [...] in Perth in February 2004! (2003/03/26) FUCS Concert (12th April 2003) "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel"Media Release from FUCS Flinders University Choral Society performs an inspiring collection of gospel songs interspersed with readings of poetry by Blake and others. 6 p.m. Saturday 12th April at Malvern Uniting Church, corner of Cambridge Tce and Marlborough St, Malvern. Backed by a strong cast of musicians, the choir brings a youthful enthusiasm to an exciting programme of gospel songs. Luke Murtagh (2003/01/31) Gurrelieder Review in the Australian (WA Edition)Excerpt from choral-announce Review of the 2003 Perth Festival Gurre-Lieder concert - choir provided by the AICSA Intervarsity Chorus. YIPPEE AYO FOR SCHOENBERG Perth's Australia Day Celebrations are usually marked by taking advantage of nature's gifts in the lead-up to the annual sky show, a fireworks spectacular over the Swan River. However, 2003 will live in the memories of a substantial number of festival patrons as the year an Irishman offered beauties rich and rare through the music of Arnold Schoenberg. Festival director Sean Doran had long entertained the idea, and despite the forbidding reputation of Schoenberg's music, each of the events - from exquisite chamber music performances to and exultant staging of Gurrelieder - was a sell out success. The 1913 world premiere of Gurrelieder was a triumph for Schoenberg, but the work is of such magnitude that Perth had waited 90 years for it's premiere. For this event Doran assembled an impressive line up of musical forces, including the Australian Youth Orchestra, the combined choral voices of the Gurrelieder Festival Chorus, and soloists Horst Hoffmann, Nicole Youl, Bernadette Cullen, Gary Rowley and Gerald English. Esteemed French conductor Diego Masson presided over the evening, masterfully controlling the work's dramatic structure and capturing its ecstatic expressiveness. It was musical and intelligent leadership that made for a profound and unforgettable experience for the performers and audience alike. Although there were occasional issues of balance, the success of Sunday's performance was dependent upon the uniform excellence of all performers. Hoffmann and Youl were, in particular, able to relish the lyricism and drama of their roles, especially through their extended melodic phrases and rapturous outpourings. Creating an honours list is a little unjust, but special mention has to be made of the AYO, which dominated the night with outstanding orchestral playing. Whether delivering transparency of colour, the ravishing beauty of atmospheric episodes or simply the sheer virtuosity of Schoenberg's orchestrations, the AYO consistently demonstrated why it should be considered a national treasure. And of the cast of fine soloists Cullen shone in the role of the Wood Dove, her magnificent vocal sound infused with the emotional intent of every word in the text. When, nearly two hours after the work commenced, the assembled forces delivered the spectacular 'Hymn to the Sun' which concludes Gurrelieder, the concert hall audience were unable to contain the enthusiasm, rising to its feet for a tremendous extended ovation. (2003/01/15) Call for singers - Australia Day 2003 in SydneyExcerpt from email to choral-announce.
