Namesakes.

Although there are only thirteen "Holgates" listed in the Melbourne phone book, there is another Alan Holgate in Melbourne, and another A. Holgate in Mooroolbark. Hence the appellation above.

Academic work.

The greater part of my career was spent in the Dept of Civil Engineering at Monash University. There I produced three books and a number of papers concerning aspects of the work of structural engineers, namely: the process of design in structural engineering; their relationship with architects; and the aesthetics of built form.

Later, I joined colleague Geoff Taplin in research on John Monash's engineering work prior to World War One. Since my retirement at the end of 1996 I have continued this work on a voluntary basis and have built the web pages which form the greater part of this site.

As a result of occasional requests for information on the earlier work, I have built an additional portion of the site concerning aspects of the work of the structural engineer. It includes the texts of my first two books with some illustrations embedded, but most catered for by links to the excellent image banks available on the web. A generous offer from VICNET has allowed me to expand the John Monash site and I continue to expand that part of the web site.

Site design.

This is a minimalist site: partly to ensure compatibility with a maximum of platforms and browsers; partly because I am more interested in content than presentation. The coding has recently [Feb 2008] been converted to W3C XHTML 1.0 Strict. The portion devoted to John Monash contains work by colleagues Geoff Taplin and Lesley Alves, and others, so has been kept distinct from that devoted to my work on design and aesthetics of structures.
