John Monash: Engineering enterprise prior to WW1.

Monier arch bridge at Anderson Street, Melbourne (Morell Bridge).

Glancing view showing the three arches. The wall-like piers are both in the river channel. Each is penetrated by two arched openings whose tops are just visible above water. The slightly segmental arch profile is noticeable in the middle span. The spandrel walls are decorated by panels of low-relief floral moulding.

The engineering design of this bridge (form-finding and stress calculations) was most probably by W. J. Baltzer of Carter Gummow & Co. Sydney. The same firm was probably responsible for building it.
