Wheeler's Bridge. Alternative schemes for bridges of varying length and height.

The adopted two-arch scheme predominates, with tall abutment blocks based well down the banks. On the right-hand side, an alternative is indicated, which would have had larger spans with abutment blocks set high up the bank. (The left-hand span is not shown.) This scheme includes part of the falsework truss required to support the arch during casting.

Two single-span solutions are shown: a high-level version with tall abutments, and a low level version. The latter would have greatly restricted the waterway and required deep cuttings for the approach roads.
