AFUW-Vic
Inc.
is one of eight state/territory associations within the Australian Federation
of University Women (AFUW). AFUW was founded in 1922 as an incorporated,
voluntary, non-partisan, self-funded national organisation administered by a
Federal Council.
The mission
of AFUW is to act as "the voice of graduate women promoting the
advancement of women worldwide and their equality of opportunity through
initiatives in education, friendship and peace."
The purposes
of AFUW-Vic are to support the objectives of AFUW and the
International Federation of University Women (IFUW) and in particular to
promote:
- the right of women and girls to education in order to
reach their full potential;
- education as a means of influencing and benefiting
society;
- the recognition and protection of human rights;
- peace, justice and equality; and
- the development of international understanding,
co-operation and friendship.
AFUW-Vic has
representatives on a number of AFUW standing committees considering
developments in: *education, *the status of women, *peace, *health &
welfare, and *the environment. These standing committees generate policy
which forms the basis for submissions to governments and other influential
bodies.
The Australian Federation of University Women
(AFUW) and 66 other nation members have a voice on international matters of
critical importance to the protection of human rights and the status of women
and girls through their affiliation with the International
Federation of University Women (IFUW) which has consultative status with
the United Nations and its specialised agencies, including UNESCO and ECOSOC.
