AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION OF
UNIVERSITY WOMEN - Vic

serving and empowering women

AFUW-Vic Inc. is one of eight state/territory associations within the Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW). AFUW was founded in 1922 as an incorporated, voluntary, non-partisan, self-funded national organisation administered by a Federal Council.

The mission of AFUW is to act as "the voice of graduate women promoting the advancement of women worldwide and their equality of opportunity through initiatives in education, friendship and peace."

The purposes of AFUW-Vic are to support the objectives of AFUW and the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) and in particular to promote:

  • the right of women and girls to education in order to reach their full potential;
  • education as a means of influencing and benefiting society;
  • the recognition and protection of human rights;
  • peace, justice and equality; and
  • the development of international understanding, co-operation and friendship.

AFUW-Vic has representatives on a number of AFUW standing committees considering developments in: *education, *the status of women, *peace, *health & welfare, and *the environment. These standing committees generate policy which forms the basis for submissions to governments and other influential bodies.

The Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW) and 66 other nation members have a voice on international matters of critical importance to the protection of human rights and the status of women and girls through their affiliation with the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) which has consultative status with the United Nations and its specialised agencies, including UNESCO and ECOSOC.
