It is current practice for persons considering to form their family either by adopting a baby, child, special needs child or a child under a permanent care order to do so through the Department of Human Services.

People inquiring are often under the impression that they can form a family with the assistance of one of the Agencies of a Church as was the practice many years ago. Regionalisation has brought about a changes in Adoption practice.
You will note that Uniting Care Connections (formerly known as Copelen Child and Family Services), while being named Southern Region is actually under the umbrella of the Uniting Church. However, only families who live in Southern Region can access this service.
The Western Region is administered by Anglicare (Anglican Church), who service families in the Western regions of Melbourne.

With regard to Permanent Care Placements families from all over the state can choose to have a child placed with them through Centacare and/or the DHS Adoption & Permanent Care Team in their region.

CENTACARE Catholic Family Services until recently known as the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau, can work with families throughout the State. Although a Catholic organisation, Centacare does not limit its work to just Catholic families. They will work with anyone who has the need.
