Saturday football, beer and pie, chips and mushy peas
Today I will rack up to the football ground
Rush my aching bones into the tight football kit
(why are they always so small)
Run out onto the pitch
So my skills one more time for a devoted public
Falling into mud
Rubbing liniment into my muscles to keep warm
Stretching and rolling to loosen my tired body
Called into a huddle.
Tactics go in one ear and out the other.
I play as it comes
No plan and no thought it can be stopped
Hard as it overloads my brain
Look at the sky and the clouds
Within and without.
Saturday football followed by a few beers.
Home for pie chips and mushy peas.
