A Samuel Sydney Smith was transported to VDL for life on 21/8/45 at the Central Criminal Court. AJCP Reel 91 HO 11/14.] Information supplied by Donna Bailey 9/10/12 dtbailey (at) latrobe.edu.au "Yes he was a convict in Tasmania but his name was Samuel Gyde. Samuel was sent at age 17 to VDL for a sentence of 7 years for stealing 5 pigs. Samuel married Eliza Rooney (also a convict) in 1853 ( Alfred and Jane were born by then), the family came to the mainland soon after and by 1855 they were in Bendigo (Sandhurst) where a son Samuel Gyde was born and died  in March of that year. Sometime soon after that they became 'Smith'. Interestingly, the doctor who signed baby Samuel's death cert in 1855 was a Hugh Smith. "
