Previous successful Australian books in this tradition has been written by paediatricians. But this book was written by a consultant psychologist with a feel for ADHD. [He prefers the term A.D.D] Ian Wallace is the director of the Forestway Psychology Centre in the Sydney suburb of Frenchs Forest. He is a well known speaker on radio and the lecture circuit in New South Wales.
Ian Wallace declares that A.D.D is a true neurological disorder that calls for understanding and practical, new approaches. His sympathy is clearly with parents who are battling not only with this confusing disorder, but also against community and professional prejudice.
Wallaces book is particularly strong on the co-existing conditions often accompanying A.D.D., namely learning difficulties, oppositional defiance disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety and emotional difficulties. These chapters are especially insightful and provide the reader with practical ideas on management.
The emphasis throughout the book is on developing your A.D.D. childs strengths while never losing sight of the rights and needs of others in the family. If you only read one book on A.D.D. this year, make it Ian Wallaces You and Your A.D.D. Child.
