MILITARY REJECT A.D.D. APPLICANTS - CLAIM

Michael McDowell of the University of Queensland sent an e-mail that reads as follows:

Sunday 08 December 1996.From Michael McDowell 's189529@student.uq.edu.au'

Subject: Military Intelligence

Anyone else see the article (distributed by Cox News Service that appeared in newspapers over the weekend) stating that "all branches of the armed forces reject potential enlistees who use Ritalin or similar behaviour-modifying medications". The article goes on to say "the Department of Defence instructs the military to reject those with a chronic history of an academic skills defect including ADD after age 12," and "use of Ritalin after age 12 was cited as the reason " for rejecting the enlistee mentioned in the article. (Ritalin is) "considered to be a mind altering drug " according to the article and the enlistee "was rejected for having a history of drug use." Comments ?

Dr Rick Jarman, who kindly forwarded this item comments wryly that `Military Intelligence’ in this context is an oxymoron.
