The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released a report for health professionals and teachers about the diagnosis and management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The report states that children suspected of having the disorder should undergo thorough assessment prior to a diagnosis being made. The assessment should include medical. developmental, behavioural and educational components. The report outlines the criteria on which a diagnosis should be made.

It supports a broad, individualised management plan for affected individuals and their families, stating that management should involve consideration of simultaneous medication use, behaviour therapy, educational management, and family counselling and support. Management plans should be individualised and should be reviewed regularly.

The report encourages co-operation between parents, doctors, teachers and other relevant professionals in the management of ADHD.

Similarly, the document acknowledges the need for collaboration between the education, justice and welfare systems in the development of management strategies, given that the costs of untreated or under-treated ADHD are carried by these areas.

The report also recommends that a range of research projects be undertaken to clarify ADHD related issues such as the safety and efficacy of long-term stimulant medication use, the impact of ADHD in the education , health, welfare and justice systems, and the management of the disorder in adults.

The report (Cat. No. 970938X) is sold for $14.95, which covers the costs of printing and distribution through the Australian Government Publishing service. Secure your copy now.
