what is ACOA/DF ?

Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA/DF (sometimes known as ACA) is a support group for persons coming from alcoholic or other dysfunctional families. All persons with a sincere desire to improve their lives are welcome. ACoA is based on the 12 steps and 12 traditions which we inherited and adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 steps are suggested as a program of recovery.

Please note that ACoA is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous or any other group. ACoA was first established in Los Angeles, USA and arrived in Australia in the late 1980s.

Each ACoA meeting is autonomous and self-supporting. To really find out about ACoA, attend one of the meetings! Note that no one has ever been bitten at an ACoA meeting. ACoA meetings tend to be informal and open. Though ACoA is a non-religious program of self-improvement, ACoA does have a spiritual focus. At an ACoA meeting, people often talk about a "higher power" of each person's understanding, and there's emphasis on "inner child work". John Bradshaw and Janet Woititz have published helpful books about being an ACA.
