The following events and activities to commemorate the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP) will occur over a number of weeks or months throughout 1999
:
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION AND LIFE STORIES
A photographic exhibition called 'Mature Visions', which shows positive images of ageing, specifically in nursing homes and residential homes, will be on display throughout 1999 at St Joseph's Hostel, Hawthorn. Also, there is a project called 'Life Stories' being conducted, where residents of St Joseph's Hostel are invited to have their life stories recorded and presented in the format of their choice.

RANGE OF PROGRAMS FROM
CENTRE FOR CULTURE, ETHNICITY & HEALTH
Several programs are being organised during IYOP which have a specific focus on older persons. These include: consultation with diverse communities in the City of Monash to determine ways to enhance council services; information needs assessment and an education campaign for Parkinson's Victoria Inc; and facilitating the development and implementation of the Hospital In The Home (HITH) of the North Western Health Network.

VISITS TO NURSING AND RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES IN CHELSEA
In the nine nursing and residential care homes in the Chelsea area, visits from school children and scout groups are being organised by the Chelsea & District Inter Church Council.

COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS STUDYING ITALIAN
Co.As.It. Italian Assistance Association is holding a competition for students studying Italian. They will be asked to provide a photograph or drawing, together with a short story or poem describing a significant older person in their lives. Prizes will be awarded and the work displayed at an exhibition at the Assisi Centre, Rosanna, later in the year.

CREATIVE TRANSITIONS THROUGH RETIREMENT
Council on the Ageing (Victoria) is presenting an innovative program developed to respond to the needs of people retiring. Three Creative Transitions Through Retirement programs are presently in place and consist of 16 sessions over 7 months.

THE GARDEN OF LIFE
The Garden of Life is an Internet initiative of Green Web Pty Ltd, a national communications and Internet company based in Victoria. The web site (www.greenweb.com.au) focuses on the social and environmental importance of gardening for older Australians.

GREY NET - ELWOOD/ST KILDA NEIGHBOURHOOD LEARNING CENTRE
Grey Net provides access to and training in the Internet for the over 50s, exploring the possibility of developing a virtual community.

EDUCATION SESSIONS
- LYNDOCH, WARRNAMBOOL
A calendar of events is being developed which includes monthly education sessions to promote successful ageing and IYOP. The 'Ageing Through the Lens' photographic exhibition from Ballarat will be on display 4 - 15 October 1999.

ART SHOW AND SEMINAR SERIES ON RETIREMENT
- MECWA COMMUNITY CARE
During 1999 there will be a seminar series on 'Planning for and Coping with Retirement and the Third Age', plus the Stonnington Address Series which incorporates a series of breakfasts, lunches and suppers with guest speakers from Australia and overseas. It is also planned to organise an art show for school students to express their feelings about grandparents and older people generally.

'LISTEN TO OLDER VOICES' RADIO PROGRAM
The Melba Community Support Project produces a weekly half-hour radio program called 'Listen to Older Voices' and it is proposed to record material at a wide range of IYOP events so that a radio program can be produced which highlights themes or issues promoted by the event.

RECORDING LIFE EXPERIENCES
During the 1999 school year, the Southern Health Care Network plans to organise students from local schools to meet, listen and record residents' life-experience stories, using reminiscence and validation principles

FALLS & MOBILITY SCREENING CLINIC
On the second Friday of each month, from 1.30 to 3pm, starting in April, the Sunbury Community Health Centre will be holding a falls & mobility screening clinic for people who are having falls or who are at risk of falling.

OLDER PEOPLE AND SPORT - VICSPORT
VicSport plans to increase the numbers of older persons competing, being officials and in administrative roles within sports. Its goal is to achieve the increase before the World Master Games in 2002. VicHealth and the Department Of State Development (Sport & Recreation) are partners with VicSport in this project.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHER EDUCATION
Victoria University of Technology and the University of Melbourne are undertaking a project to incorporate issues about ageing into the primary school curriculum and into teacher education.

HEALTHY AGEING PROJECT
A Women's Health West project focussing on the healthy ageing of older women with disabilities and consisting of a three-staged process will be run during 1999.
