Many Local Governments are organising events and activities to commemorate the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP):

MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA (MAV)
The MAV will provide every Council in Victoria with relevant information about IYOP and will encourage their participation.

CITY OF DAREBIN
Darebin has a calendar of events for the last half of 1999 to celebrate IYOP. Look for ongoing information in Preston Times and Northcote Leader, or

CITY OF GLEN EIRA - NOVEMBER CONCERT
In November the council will be holding a cabaret style concert at the Town Hall to celebrate the International Year of the Older Persons. An open invitation will be extended to all older residents of the municipality to attend. Free transport will be provided.

SHIRE OF HEPBURN - HOME SAFETY PROGRAM
Throughout 1999 a home safety program for older people will be undertaken. An in-home safety guide will be provided, with the aim of preventing injuries that occur in the home due to falls or burns. Older people who access the council's support services will be assisted to undertake a safety audit of their homes.

CITY OF KINGSTON - PRIMARY SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Throughout the school year, there will be a program in primary schools, particularly Year Six, which will involve the children in several simulated experiences that older people experience daily. The children will be given a meals on wheels lunch and will use wheel chairs, walking aids, etc.

CITY OF KNOX CALENDAR OF EVENTS
In conjunction with Knox Seniors Network Inc. IYOP events have been organised for every month of the year in the City of Knox. A comprehensive calendar of events celebrating IYOP is available from the Council.

CITY OF MAROONDAH CALENDAR OF EVENTS
A calendar of events offered by Maroondah City Council for IYOP may be obtained from customer service centres at Ringwood Mall (phone: 9876 9899), Croydon Main Street Centre (phone: 9722 9529) or the Council Offices in Ringwood (phone: 9871 0275).

CITY OF MELBOURNE SPECIAL PROGRAM
The City of Melbourne has employed a part time project officer to coordinate activities and initiatives during IYOP. A number of special events will be organised, including a Daytime Active Ageing Global Walk on Sunday 3 October and a free, daytime New Year's Eve celebration to welcome a new millenium for all ages.
During IYOP 1999, the City of Melbourne aims to recognise and acknowledge older people's involvement in the life of the City, to promote positive perceptions of ageing and to develop strategies which have a lasting impact and benefit for the City.

CITY OF WHITEHORSE EVENTS
From July to December there will be a range of events to celebrate IYOP in the City of Whitehorse. These include 'Migration Memories' - a journey through art, writings, sculpture, photography and textiles; an IYOP community concert, a Spring Racing Carnival Tea Dance and a 'Bringing Together the Ages' concert.

CITY OF WYNDHAM WORKSHOPS
From July to November there will be special workshops covering a range of topics including taking medication, personal safety for the older adult, pain management, surfing the web and foot care, and on 29 September there will be an IYOP Tea Dance.
