AUSTRALIAN COALITION '99 VICTORIA - celebrating IYOP 1999 in Victoria
  Calendar of Events

The United Nations has designated 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons, drawing particular attention to the need to see ageing as a lifelong process. The UN has adopted eighteen Principles for Older Persons, under the five headings:

* INDEPENDENCE   * PARTICIPATION   * CARE   * SELF-FULFILMENT   * DIGNITY

To celebrate the International Year of Older Persons in Victoria,  AUSTRALIAN COALITION '99 VICTORIA  has been established, on a partnership basis, by a wide range of organisations which represent older people. It is affliliated with Australian Coalition '99 (National).

The United Nations' statements on the International Year of Older Persons have stressed that the focus should not be exclusively on old age, but should stress the interrelationships between younger and older people. The theme for the International Year of Older Persons is "towards a society for all ages".

On 22 March 1995, the Report of the United Nation's Secretary-General stated, in part:

"A society for all is seen as an inclusive society which must be based upon respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, cultural and religious diversity, social justice, democratic participation and the rule of law. Thus, we may think of a society for all as one that adjusts its structures and functioning, as well as its policies and plans, to the needs and capabilities of all, thereby releasing the potential of all, for the benefit of all. A "society for all ages" would, additionally, enable the generations to invest in one another and share in the fruits of that investment, guided by the twin principles of reciprocity and equity."
