The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is the professional association for the library and information services sector. ALIA has more than 8500 individual and institutional members throughout Australia and has branches in each State and Territory. ALIA also represents the 10 million Australians who regularly use our nation's libraries and who rely on our detailed knowledge of and passionate interest in such important issues such as censorship, education, copyright and equal access to information for all Australians.

In support of the International Year of Older Persons, together with the National Office for the Information Economy and Adult Learners Australia, ALIA will be playing a major role in the Seniors On-Line Day initiative on 7 September. ALIA will use its website ALIAnet and its monthly newsletter onCITE to promote IYOP and its activities. Each year ALIA celebrates Australian Library Week, which promotes the tremendous contribution libraries make to educate, inform and entertain all Australians. During Library Week in May 1999, a number of libraries around the country used the week to host activities in support of IYOP.
