The National Women's Justice Coalition Inc. was established in February 1995 after the release of the Australian Law Reform Commission's Report on Equality before the Law. The ALRC found that there was a 'failure of justice' for women in Australia. The NWJC promotes women's legal equality by awareness raising, coordinating and lobbying on women's justice issues and by building networks and facilitating the work of individuals and groups. The NWJC focuses on promoting women's legal equality at a national level, but advises and provides networking and technical assistance to state groups and others on state and local issues.

Plans for 1999
The NWJC's memberships includes the Older Women's Network.
In relation to IYOP, the NWJC is keen to promote:

  • Research about the legal needs of older Australians and particularly older women.
  • Research about the availability of, and access to, legal services to older Australians and particularly older women.
  • Sensitivity on the part of legal service providers and particularly government funded legal aid services (legal aid commissions, community legal centres, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services) to the needs of older Australians and particularly older women.
  • Coordination and work by a range of stakeholders in relation to these issues.

    • The NWJC has promoted IYOP through their website and is about to offer assistance to the Older Women's Network through the NWJC's Australian Virtual Centre for Women and the Law Project. The NWJC is about to start scoping a conference on Women in Regional Australia: Legal Needs and Access to Legal Services, tentatively scheduled for November 1999 and will ensure that there is a focus on the legal needs of older women in Regional Australia.

    The NWJC would be most willing to undertake research of the kind outlined above, if suitable partnership and resourcing arrangements were established.
