The Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) is an incorporated Association. The main objective of the Association is to promote gerontology and to disseminate and share knowledge amongst all concerned. The Association is affiliated with the International Association of Gerontology (IAG) and in 1980 was largely responsible for the creation of the Asia/Oceania Region of the IAG.

The membership of the AAG is multi-disciplinary and open to people from all disciplines interested or involved in the filed of ageing. The Association therefore provides a forum where members from many disciplines can share their expertise and knowledge. The objectives are sufficiently broad to accommodate clinicians and research workers, practitioners and administrators as well as others.

The national body is governed by a Council representative of the eight autonomous state divisions. Each division plans its own program. The main activity of the national body is the promotion of the Annual Conference in conjunction with each division in turn act as host. The national body organises the R.M. Gibson Travelling Fellowship.
