The Association of Independent Retirees Inc (AIR) was formed in 1990 and now has branches in every state and the ACT (55 branches at present) plus a Country Members Section for those unable to attend branch meetings. The aim of the Association is to protect and advance the interest of retirees who have funded, in whole or in part, their own retirement. There are currently around 775,000 self-funded retirees in Australia, plus around 500,000 that are partly self-funded retirees.

AIR has actively promoted co-operation with other organisations whose objectives are consistent with those of the Association. Together with the Superannuated Commonwealth Officers Association, AIR co-founded the Retirement Income Conference which meets regularly. AIR was also instrumental in the establishment of the NSW Peak Council.
