TRANX

Rear, 1423 Toorak Road

BURWOOD VIC 3125

TRANX was established in 1986 in response to concern about the over-prescribing of benzodizepines (tranquillisers and sleeping pills) in the community, particularly to women and older people.

TRANX provides a state wide service with strong consumer focus. TRANX functions in three main areas:

  1. treatment;
  2. providing resources; and
  3. education and prevention programs.

TRANX also provides counselling treatment for panic and anxiety disorders and has recently established PADA (the Panic and Anxiety Disorders Association) as part of its function.

The organisation has undertaken a number projects in relation to benzodiazepine use and older people, with particularly emphasis on older people in residential care. Two resources that have been developed as a result of these projects are: booklet title "Sleeping Pills and You" and a book titled "Sweet Dreams: how to reduced the use of tranquiliser and sleeping pills in nursing homes and hostels."
