ALA has been appointed by the ASPBAE as its lead agency for a new
program called OPAL - Older People and Adult Learning, which has
ramifications for the UN Year of Older Persons in 1999. Their first
objective - now underway - is a survey to identify adult education providers
in the region who already have programs for the older members of their
communities, those who may be interested in doing something of that nature
in the future and those who, so far, have not ventured into that area.
Early in 1999, OPAL will produce a directory of providers which will
be circulated to those responding to the survey, it has plans for a
newsletter and, if funding is available, it hopes to hold regional
seminars and workshops where participants can exchange information and
discuss common issues.
