ACHCA consistently seeks to promote the interests of the elderly and the ethos of service the Church brings to aged care ministry. At times this has called for strong advocacy and determined public stances. This policy position is derived from Catholic social teaching and it promotes a preference for the poor, disadvantages and marginalised in the community. The Catholic Church operates 17,000 nursing home and hostel beds across Australia.

This is in addition to the numerous community aged care services and retirement living organisations conducted under its auspices. It is the country's largest provider of non-government health and aged care services.
