AC '99 UPDATE - EDITION No. 6 (February 1999)
Ageing Denomination
The Royal Australian Mint began the New Year with
the announcement of the release of the new effigy of Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which will appear on circulating coins
later in the year. Since the Queen's crowning in 1953 there have been four
effigies of Her Majesty. Later this year the Royal Australian Mint will
produce a new batch of circulating coins displaying the new portrait.
The Royal Australian Mint has released two 1999
Six Coin Sets to commemorate IYOP. The theme of "Australia- towards a
society for all ages" has been chosen for the Sets which are available in
proof and uncirculated finishes. In both sets, the $1 coin is devoted to
the logo representing the Year, which is surrounded by a border stating the
name of the Year and the theme. Standard designs of 5c, 10c, 20c 50c and $2
coins are represented on the other coins in the sets. There is also a
special memento coin set for babies born in 1999.
For more information on the $1 IYOP coin, call the Royal Australian Mint
on 1300 652 020.

IYOP NEWS
"Age & Consent" is the new exhibition by the
photographic artist, Ella Dreyfus, who developed the award-winning and
controversial Pregnancy Series in 1992. Ella spent time as
artist-in-residence in the aged care unit of a Sydney hospital to develop
"Age & Consent" which features confronting images of older women in the
nude and both male and female hospital patients with dementia.
Of Ella's pregnancy series, Eva Cox of University of NSW said,"I think we
owe Ella a great debt that she has had the courage and the persistence to
create this marvellous collection of images." Similarly, Naomi Wolf
commented,"A dazzling look at a state that is so often denigrated as a
disability. The richer the images we have of our bodies the better it is
for our minds."
The Body Shop is a key sponsor of the "Age
& Consent" exhibition which has already started
to provoke much interest within general media.
