Queensland
Planning is well advanced with government and non-government organisations working together to co-ordinate the "launch"on October 1st 1998. One activity of the launch is the ABC debate which will involve university students and eminent older people of the community. The Queensland Governor, the Premier and the Minister have been invited to participate. It will be a high profile media event broadcast live throughout Queensland on the ABC, with highlights to be repeated in the evening between 6pm and 9pm on ABC television. The launch will be highlighted by initiatives including seniors riding Harley Davidson motor cycles, an air exhibition of vintage planes and a convoy of vintage cars.
There are more than 60 events presently planned for IYOP throughout the year. To date the events include four International Conferences to be held in Brisbane, an international hockey tournament, four National events and numerous Statewide events. This number is continually growing and the involvement of the entire state of Queensland is promising to make the year eventful.
AC '99-Qld congratulates the members of Older People Speak Out(OPSO) on their magnificent efforts in raising awareness of AC '99-Qld in the regional areas. The enthusiasm from regional Queensland and district organisations has been overwhelming, and a total of 139 organisations around Queensland have become registered partners of the coalition.

The 1 October 1998 event called Making the Most of Lifewill start the countdown to 1999. This event, which will be free, will be opened by the Governor of Victoria, Sir James Gobbo, and will include a huge choir, the Royal Australian Navy Band and dancers from a variety of cultures performing at the Opening Ceremony. A wide range of physical activities from golf and table tennis to rock climbing and abseiling, plus less physically demanding activities such as scrabble, bridge and computer activities will also be organised. There are many IYOP initiatives being planned by the Victorian partner network for 1999. One example is "Our O.W.N. Wellbeing", a concept developed by Older Women’s Network, and supported by the YWCA Melbourne and Women’s Health, Victoria. It is a 10-week program, one day a week, for older women and aims to present exercise and information as part of an enjoyable experience that is fun to do, shared with a peer group.
In another project, the Victoria University of Technology, in conjunction with the University of Melbourne and possibly U3A, is planning an initiative to incorporate issues about ageing into the primary school curriculum and into teacher education.

AC '99 WA and the Office of Seniors’ Interests in the WA state government has been strengthened by the formation of the International Year of Older Persons 1999 Implementation Committee. The committee includes the Secretariats of both AC '99 WA and OSI. One of the benefits of this partnership implementation for the year will be the pooling of resources and the joint production of promotional material.
The launch of IYOP on 1 October 1998 will bring together all government and NGO organisations and individuals in WA who support the Year, and both the Governor and the Premier have been invited. There will also be a civic reception given by the City of Perth.
The benchmark research into attitudes towards older people in WA has commenced by a market research firm. Another survey in 2000 will measure the shift in attitude brought about by 1999 activities.
