poem

WHO'S OLD?

by Judie Hillard

        Over the hill? Who? Me?
    Mutton dressed up as lamb?
I'm certainly not as young as I was,
But I don't feel as old as I am.

My feet still in tandem work,
And my legs support my weight,
I'm breathing, eating and sleeping well,
While my brain still governs my fate.

     My mem'ry occasionally strays
When names and dates elude me.
But my date of birth I can still recall
And I know my name is Judie.

         With girth expanding a little
And very much broader in beam.
Rich, cream cakes and crisp, golden fries
Are now but a distant dream.

But, despite minor changes in lifestyle,
And less years ahead than behind,
I refuse to be slave to Old Father Time,
Nor be to his shackles resigned.

            Over the hill? Not 1!
           I know the essential truth,
That beneath the grey hair and lines on the brow,
There lingers the essence of youth.
