UPDATE 15 - EXTRA NEWS

THE AUSTRALIAN NUTRITION FOUNDATION INC.

Good nutrition adds life to your years

It's a fact, Australians are living longer. Approximately 12% of Australians are aged 65 years and over. It is projected that this figure will grow to approximately one quarter of the population by the year 2050.

While older Australians constitute only 12% of the population they use approximately 35% of the total expenditure on health services. Many health problems such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis that affect us as we get older are influenced by our dietary habits.

Recent international research has identified that a key factor in the health of the older persons is good nutrition. Achieving good nutrition in senior years, however can be difficult given the body's physical changes, illness, the ever-changing food supply and often increased budgetary limitations.

To help older Australians achieve better health through a nutritious diet, the Australian Nutrition Foundation (ANF) Queensland Division has launched Adding Life to Your Years - The Cookbook. Developed in consultation with seniors groups, the book aims to provide solutions to the nutritional and lifestyle changes faced by this age group. The booklet was supported by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care's Healthy Seniors Initiative as part of the International Year of Older Persons.

A key theme of Adding Life to Your Years - The Cookbook is to promote enjoyment from eating a wide range of nutritious foods. Adding Life to Your Years - The Cookbook features tasty and nutritious recipes for two, colour photos for each recipe, how to eat better on a budget, and features a seven day menu plan, shopping list, plus more to help older Australians get the most out of life.

Adding Life to Your Years; The Cookbook is available from ANF for only $2.95 (plus $1.50 for postage; $4.45 in total) by sending a cheque or money order to ANF 82 Latrobe Tce PADDINGTON QLD 4064. For more information call ANF (Qld Div) on (07) 3876-2677.
