The Abbeyfield Structure

Abbeyfield houses are developed and run by teams of dedicated and hard-working volunteers (the local societies), in partnership with the national body, The Abbeyfield Society (Australia) Ltd.

The local societies are made up of local people with a concern about housing choices for the older members of the community. They contribute a wide range of skills and knowledge to each project and take on a wide range of tasks relating to managing the development and on-going administration of a house, including:

  • locate land for the house
  • manage the house budget
  • contribute to the planning process
  • raise funds for fit-out
  • assess residents
  • employ the housekeeper
  • support and assist residents and housekeeper
  • ensure that maintenance is carried out
  • oversight the construction or renovation of the building

Any interested person can become an Abbeyfield volunteer and make a valuable contribution to improving the lives of older people in their community.

Abbeyfield volunteers and residents celebrate the 90th birthday of a Malvern resident.

The national body, the Abbeyfield Society (Australia) Ltd, is a company limited by guarantee. It provides an Australia wide co-ordinating role, including:

  • developing new projects
  • establishing policy and standards
  • carrying out research
  • negotiating with governments
  • managing industrial relations issues
  • supporting and advising local Abbeyfield groups
  • maintaining a legal structure for the organisation as a whole
