The Residents

Most residents living in Abbeyfield houses have relatively few assets and are dependent on the Age Pension. Don't be put off if you are ineligible for the Age Pension though! We are currently developing new models to include residents whose needs are more social than financial. The most important criteria are that you are over 55 (most residents are in their seventies) and capable of independent living. If you currently make use of the services of Home and Community Care programs, you will still be eligible for the same services as an Abbeyfield resident.

Residents may come from the local community or may have other local affiliations with the house and district (through relatives or friends). They are often isolated, frail and in need of support but wish to maintain their independence and manage their own lives. The level of support provided by fellow residents and local society members often makes it possible for residents to stay on longer than they would normally be able to do if they were living on their own. Most Abbeyfield residents are single, but married couples are very welcome!

Meal times are lively in a Abbeyfield house, and provide a focus for the conversation and companionship found in our supportive houses

Abbeyfield homes provide our residents with security, companionship, good food and comfort without surrendering their rights to make decisions. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming an Abbeyfield resident, please contact our head office. We'd love to hear from you!
