What is a Residents’ Association?A Residents association is a community group consisting of local volunteers who meet to promote the interests of residents in their area. Residents associations can also provide the means for residents to communicate with their Councillors and influence the decisions that are made about their homes and the communities in which they live.
What is its PurposeABAGRA will aim to improve the quality of lifestyle for the residents of Altona Bay and Altona Green; acting as a forum for community decision-making and give fair and balanced community representation on any issues pertaining to our residents and community.
The association will lobby on behalf of the community, comment on proposals which affect the area, take a proactive role in ensuring the construction and maintenance of community infrastructure and increased service provision and to be actively involved and consulted in Council decision making processes and strategies relating to local projects.
ABAGRA will strive to promote a sense of community, organise activities that benefit residents, create opportunities to celebrate the life of the community, foster linkages between individuals with common interests and or concerns, be a conduit for the sharing of information and be alert and responsive to the needs of our residents. It will publicise the association as much as possible to ensure the local community are aware of its existence and encourage them to actively participate to achieve a better community for all.
How is it run?As the association will need to be incorporated, we are required to appoint a Committee of Management. This requires someone to be the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. We will have some further information on what this entails, but in fact, its mainly an administrative title, and you will be assisted by the other people around you. As with any volunteer organisation, it is always difficult to get people actively involved, so we will be encouraging as many people to help out as possible, as ‘many hands make for light work’. It will be a fun way to get involved in the association and meet fellow residents of the area. That said, the association will be informal and all meetings will be open to the public.
How often will it meet?It is expected that ABAGRA would meet one evening every 2 to 3 months, as well as publish a regular newsletter and a web site is hoped to be created soon .
What will it do?It will bring us together as a local community, raise the profile of Altona Bay/Green and help to lobby the local Council on issues such as;
▪ Motorcycles along Skeleton Creek, Cheetham Wetlands and Truganina Parklands ▪ Increased maintenance of our roads, parks and creek corridors ▪ Increase tree planting in all streets (although some effort has taken place recently) ▪ Improvements to HD Graham Reserve and Truganina Parklands ▪ Improved line marking and additional speed bumps on arterial roads ▪ Spraying for bugs along skeleton creek (a real problem this year) ▪ Lobby for the duplication of Queen Street and increased bus services
