Please find attached a petition to the House of Representatives in relation to the death in custody of Mr. Ward who died of heatstroke in inhumane and avoidable circumstances in January 2008 in Western Australia.  The focus of this petition is the fact that the treatment of Mr. Ward violated Australia's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention Against Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and the Convention of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and that these violations need to be remedied and their recurrence prevented.
 
Your assistance in distributing this petition and assisting with getting thousands of signatures and organising for completed ones to be returned to me by 30th September 2009 is greatly appreciated by the Deaths in Custody Watch Committee of Western Australia INC, Mr. Ward's family and community and, people across Australia.

Australian Bureau of Statistics report on deaths between 1995 and 1997
indigenous health:
This is a damning report on the performance of our nation over the last few decades.

23% of all infant deaths involve indigenous children.

53% of indigenous males die before the age of 50 - compared to 13% of the general population.

For the 35 to 54 year old age group the indigenous death rate is 6 to 7 times the national average.
