July 2005

Dang Kim Hien's performance at Deli Divas, a concert featuring Susannah Coleman-Brown, Ria Soemardjo, Dang Kim Hien, Kavisha Mazzella & Irini Vela, and Ileana Posas. Iwaki Auditorium, ABC Southbank Centre, Melbourne (29th July 2005).

Dang Kim Hien's latest composition for Vietnamese monochord, On a Quivering String, was premiered in this concert.

"The dan bau (Vietnamese monochord) is said to be one of only two traditional musical instruments with exclusively Vietnamese origins. But Dang Kim Hien's approach to the instrument is anything but traditional. At the Iwaki Auditorium on Friday, Hien began her set with a startlingly contemporary demonstration of what the dan bau can do. Using just one string (and a rod that vibrates and changes the tension of the string), she produced unearthly sounds that recalled the eerie tremolo of a theremin"
Jessica Nicholas (The Age, 1 August 2005)
