Loco vans (casualty vans, acccident vans) made up part of the consist of the breakdown train. They carried a great variety of tools and other equipment need to re-rail trains or carry out repairs at accident sites. As with tool stores, obsolete goods stock was converted for this use and the 12-wheel vans began life as OO class steel open wagons, designed for South Gippsland coal traffic. They proved to be very unpopular with VR employees and were soon modified as shown with extensions to the sides and a roof. John McCallum used resin castins for the open wagon part and added the side extensions and roof in styrene. Bogies are cast in low melt alloy. All patterns and castings for this 4mm scale model are home made.
